TRAVEL & LIFESTYLE

MAY 10, 2018

SIEM REAP, CAMBODIAॐ

One summer for my birthday I took a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. Both countries are mind blowing for very different reasons and in this post I am just going to share about Cambodia. The next time I go to Cambodia I am going to plan on spending a lot more time there to visit the beaches and other major cities but for this trip specifically I went to Siem Reap to get as close as I could to Angkor Wat. If you haven't heard of Angkor check it out!. Angkor Wat is a giant temple complex and the largest religious monument in the world. When I try to think of ways to explain Angkor my mind goes blank only because its so magical its hard to articulate. Think giant temples in the jungle with the most beautiful hand-carved art all over the structures that go for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles. Some of these temples have straight up trees living on top of them with gigantic vines coming from the tops all the way to the bottom. Living trees. On temples. This is a real thing. Trees are one of my favorite thing on the planet so for me this was delightful. When I was at Angkor Wat I spread some of my fathers ashes on the ground and also brought some jewelry from my friend Nikki's sister who passed away and left it at one of the temples as an offering because Nikki's sister went to Angkor Wat  before and it was her favorite place in the world. Since my father passed, I have spread his ashes in the north of Thailand and Cambodia and I plan on making it tradition to bring him around the world with me. I took three full days to discover as many temples as possible and also visited the Cambodian killing fields and museums that displayed history from the Khmer Rouge / Cambodian Civil War which was informative yet devastating to see as one of the displays outside on the fields was a huge space that contained real human skulls of the people that were killed in the war. The thing that I loved about Cambodia was the culture. The people. The food. The spirituality. The kindness. The smiles. Always kindness. On one of my last days there I got a traditional style Cambodian tattoo that stands for universal health on my left shoulder blade. I was impressed with the cleanliness and professionalism that exists in tattoo culture in Siem Reap and I would tell anyone I know to not be afraid to get completely tattooed there. I went to Siem Reap in June so you can only imagine how HOT it was. Hottest part of the year. Some of the most intense heat I have ever experienced but completely manageable because during this time of year you get a lot of rain as well so there were many breaks in the day from the hot weather. The hotel I stayed in was super cute and had a pool with a beautifully blue-tiled floor and small waterfall. They also had AMAZING Khmer food there. One of the things I loved about waking up in Cambodia every morning was somewhere in town there was a group of people playing music through what sounded like a loud speaker and I could hear it from my room. When the music was playing it felt very surreal especially early in the morning. Music from a loudspeaker as you wake up probably doesn't sound fun or enjoyable but these were some of the most gorgeous sounds I have heard in my life. I will never forget it. If you're trying to be frugal while traveling, Cambodia is the place for you. Easy to do in this part of the world as everything cost pennies compared to American Dollars. Cambodia is on my highly recommend list especially if you are in love with Southeast Asia like I am. Hit me up with any and all questions! Would love to help you plan your next trip. xoxox Thomas
